Box Score MEN'S BASKETBALL EDGES SAINT ANSELM,
67-66
MANCHESTER, NH - The Pace University men's
basketball team defeated the Hawks of Saint Anselm College, 67-66,
in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Stoutenburgh
Gym in Manchester, NH. The Setters improve to 15-10 overall and
11-6 in the NE-10, while the Hawks fall to 13-10 and 9-9 in
conference play.
Down by one with 18 seconds remaining, junior Desmond
Quincy-Jones (Rye NY/Rye) hit a game-winning jumper
lifting the Setters over the Hawks. Quincy-Jones finished the night
with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds
(five offensive). Senior Oneil Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica/Excelsior) (Kingston,
Jamaica/Excelsior) also recorded a double-double for Pace
with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds (six offensive).
Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) (Centreville, VA/ Paul VI) led all
scorers with a game-high 25 points shooting 9-for-19 from the
field, including 7-for-12 from beyond the arc.
The first half saw five ties and two lead changes. Saint Anselm
held the advantage for most of the half, leading by as many as six
points on two occasions. Down by six with 4:53 left in the
half, Pace scored eight straight points led by a pair of three
pointers from Williams, giving the Setters a two point lead. Saint
Anselm's Matt Mulcahy would tie the game for the fifth time in the
half on a lay-up, but Williams gave Pace the lead once again on a
lay-up of his own, heading into halftime with a 26-24 advantage.
Both teams shot an even 34.5% (10-for-29) from the field, but the
Hawks were 4-for-15 from three, while the Setters were only
2-for-10 from downtown. Pace was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free
throw line, while Saint Anselm was unable to get to the charity
stripe in the half.
The second half was just as tight as the first, with five ties
and eight lead changes. Pace took an eight point lead, 63-55, with
4:35 remaining, on a three pointer from Gibraltar White (Gautier, MS/Gautier)
(Gautier, MS/Gautier). The Hawks answered back with the
help of an 11-2 run, highlighted by a three point play from
Mulcahy. Mulchay tied the game for the 10th time at 65
with 23 seconds left and gave the Hawks the lead on the ensuing
free throw. The Setters would have the last say as Quincy-Jones hit
the game-winner seconds later.
Saint Anselm was led by Giovanni Carenza, who scored a team-high
22 points on 9-for-20 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from
downtown. Carenza also grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds, recording a
double-double. Chris Vetrano added 14 points, while Mulcahy and
Ross Pentland finished the afternoon with 11 and 10 points
respectively. Jeff Dickson dished out a game-high eight assists.
Pace held the slim rebounding edge, 37-36
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, February
7th, when they play host to the Dolphins of Le Moyne
College in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the two
schools this season. Le Moyne won the first game, 80-63, back on
December 16th in Syracuse, NY.
