SETTERS HOLD OFF AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL 85-74
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Senior guard Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) broke the school three-point record at the 15:31 mark of the first half, giving him 260 for his career and breaking the career record previous held by Jay Carlington, who had 259 threes from 1998-2002. Williams would finish with six threes, totaling 264 so far for his career. The Setters would hold off a late run by American International to post their first win of the season, moving their record to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
Pace would open up a 24-16 advantage midway through the first half as Williams nailed three trifectas, while Carlos Howard (Fort Washington, MD/Gonzaga College High) (Fort Washington, MD/Gonzaga College HS) also hit one three-ball and got the game's first two points. The Setters would extend their lead to as high as 11 in the first half at 31-20 with 5:44 remaining. American International responded with a 9-3 run to close to five points with less than 30 second left in the half before Laurence McGhee (Linden, NJ/Linden) (Linden, NJ/Linden) nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Setters a 37-29 lead at the break.
The Setters opened up an 11-point lead at the 16:57 mark before the Yellow Jackets made a run. American International used a 16-5 run, capped by a three-point play by Ryan Leak, to tie the score a 48 with 14:34 left in the game. The next nine minutes featured three ties and four leads changes before the Setters began to pull away. A three-point basket by Williams at the 5:32 mark put the Setters back in the lead by one at 67-65 and kick-started a 13-2 run over the 3:04, giving Pace a 77-67 lead with 2:28 left in the game. American International closed the gap to eight points before the Setters hit 4-for-6 from the charity stripe as McGhee and Randy Wilson (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) both went 2-for-2 in the final minute of the game to seal the victory.
For the Setters, Williams led the way, tallying a game-high 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting and 6-for-8 from downtown. Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) (Rye, NY/Rye) posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. Gibraltar White (Gautier, MS/Gautier) (Gautier, MS/Gautier) tallied 14 points and four rebounds, while McGhee chipped in 11 points and a game-high six assists. Wilson finished with six points and nine rebounds.
For American International, Aikeem Vanderhorst led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points and eight rebounds. Colson Senat posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards along with three assists. Ryan Leak totaled 13 points and four rebounds, while Sesoo Ikpah chipped in nine points, six assists, and four steals.
