BRIAN SCHUSTER NAMED HOMECOMING MVP
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Junior linebacker Brian
Schuster (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) totaled 13
tackles and had an interception, earning homecoming MVP honors as
the Setters fell to Falcons of Bentley College 25-6 in a
Northeast-10 Conference game played at Pace Field in Pleasantville.
The Setters drop to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the NE-10, while the
Falcons improve to 4-1 overall and in conference play.
The Falcons struck first as they took the opening possession
capped off by a Jon Kaczka touchdown reception from John White. The
Setters' Ray Gregg (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) (Stony Point, NY/North
Rockland) would throw an interception on Pace's opening
drive, setting up the Falcons to score again. Bentley's kicking
game would see some action as Falcon placekicker Tyler McNamara
connected on a 20-yard field goal, tying the Bentley single-season
field goal record with his eighth of 2007, giving Bentley a 10-0 at
the end of the first quarter.
On the ensuing Bentley possession, the Setters Richard
Peter (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) came off the end
unblocked on a Bentley punt attempt and tackled the punter at the
Bentley 33-yard-line, giving the Setter offense excellent field
position. A pivotal roughing the passer penalty against Bentley on
the first play would move the Setters inside the Falcon
20-yard-line. Five plays later, sophomore Justin Polanis (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis)
(Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) would scamper in from four
yards out to cut into the Falcon lead. Bentley's Scott Miller
partially blocked Josh Trumper's (Pine Grove, NJ/Toms River South) (Pine Grove, NJ/Toms River
South) extra point attempt, giving Bentley a 10-6 lead. On
the ensuing kickoff, Bentley would extend their lead as returner
Paul Tetzel would take the kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, as the
Falcons would take a 17-6 lead into halftime.
Early in the third quarter, the Setters would come up with a big
defensive stop as Schuster intercepted a White pass at the Setter
three-yard-line. The defensive play would work against the Setters
as on Pace's first offensive play, Bentley's Darryl LaForest would
tackle the Setter ball carrier in the end zone for a Falcon safety
and a 19-6 lead. Bentley would widen their advantage as White would
throw his second touchdown of day, as he hit John Studley on a
24-yard strike to give Bentley a 25-6 lead as the extra point snap
would be mishandled and the rush attempt failed.
The teams would exchange punts over the next several possessions
but the Setters had a key miscue by the Falcons as a punt snap
would sail over the punter's head and Pace would get the ball on
the Falcon one-yard-line. The Setters could not capitalize as they
were denied a touchdown on four consecutive rush attempts and would
turn the ball over on downs.
For the Setters, Polanis totaled 17 yards on 12 carries and
accounted for the lone score on the day. Gregg completed 5-for-16
through the air for 42 yards and one interception. On defense, the
second leading tackler after Schuster was
Joe Streany (Croton, NY/Croton), who recorded
10 tackles. Ernst Turnier (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) (Stratford, CT/Bunnell)
posted eight tackles and two quarterback sacks. Lee
Robinson (New Milford, CT/New Milford) would chip in a
pair of sacks along with five tackles.
The Setters return to action when they travel to New Haven, CT
for a Northeast-10 Conference game against Southern Connecticut
State University on Friday, October 12 for 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The
Falcons will host the Pioneers of C.W. Post next Friday.
