Box Score MEN'S BASKETBALL OUTLASTS ASSUMPTION,
70-63, IN OVERTIME
WORCESTER, MA - The Pace University men's basketball team
defeated the Greyhounds of Assumption College, 70-63, in overtime,
in a Northeast-10 Conference match up held at Laska Gym in
Worcester, MA. The Setters even their overall record to 8-8 and 4-4
in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds drop to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in
conference play.
The first half featured action from both sides as neither team
was able to take advantage. Assumption would take the early lead
starting the game on a 14-4 run, beginning with a lay-up by Pat
Shea and ending on another lay-up, this time by Leroy Byron. The
Greyhounds would build their lead to as many as 14 points. The
Setters answered with a run of their own, ending the half on a 19-5
run to even the score at 25 heading into the break. Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI)
scored nine points in the run to end the half.
The second half was just as exciting as both teams battled for
control. Pace took their first lead of the game on a lay-up by
Oneil Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica/Excelsior) to begin the half, but Assumption would again take a
double digit lead with the help of a 22-7 run. The Setters would
answer back again closing out the half on a 24-9 run to force
overtime. Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) again led the run scoring 11 points.
The Setters took control of the game in overtime outscoring the
Greyhounds 12-5 in the extra frame. Pace was able to win the game
despite shooting 30.0% (21-for-70) from the floor and 29.2%
(7-for-24) from three. The Setters were able to help themselves at
the line going 21-for-32. Assumption shot 33.8% (24-for-71) from
the floor, 3-for-23 from beyond the arc, and 12-for-19 at the line.
Rebounds were even at 52 apiece.
For Pace, Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) (Centreville, VA/Paul
VI) led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, going
7-for-14 from downtown. Oneil Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica/Excelsior) (Kingston,
Jamaica/Excelsior) recorded a double-double scoring 10
points to go along with his game-high 12 rebounds.
Gibraltar White (Gautier, MS/Gautier) (Gautier, MS/Gautier) was the
second leading scorer for the Setters with 11 points.
Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) (Rye, NY/Rye) contributed
with nine points and seven rebounds.
Assumption also had three players in double figures, led by
Corey Diethorn who scored a team-high 15 points. Greg Twomey
contributed with 12 points, while Pat Shea added 11 points and tied
for the team-high in rebounds with eight.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, January 6th, when they
play host to the Warriors of Merrimack College, in a Northeast-10
Conference match up. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
