PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace University men's basketball team
defeated the University of Massachusetts - Lowell Riverhawks in a
Northeast-10 Conference match-up, by the score of 75-65, this
evening at the Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center on
the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The Setters improve
their overall record to 11-9 and 7-5 in the NE-10, while the
Riverhawks fall to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
The first half featured even action from both sides, before the
Setters were able to put some distance between themselves and the
Riverhawks, building their lead by as many as 10 points with 5:12
remaining in the half. Pace would take a 31-27 advantage
heading into the break. The Setters' first half performance
was led by freshman Carlos Howard (Fort Washington, MD/Gonzaga College High) (Fort Washington,
MD/Gonzaga College High), who scored nine points. Both
teams shot an even 41.4% (12-for-29) from the field, but Pace was
able to convert on 5-of-11 from three, while UMass Lowell went
3-for-11 from downtown.
The second half featured much of the same as both teams battled
for control. The Riverhawks were down by two points, 60-58, with
4:09 left in the game, but that would be a close as they would get,
as the Setters finished the game outscoring their visitors 15-7.
Both teams were even from the field once again as the Setters
shot 48.3% (14-for-29), while the Riverhawks shot 48.4% (15-31).
Free throws were key in the Pace victory as they converted on
13-of-18 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Pace was led by junior Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) (Rye,
NY/Rye), who scored 20 of his game and career-high 27
points, in the second half. Quincy Jones ended the night shooting
11-for-14 from the field. Ryan Williams (Centreville, VA/Paul VI) (Centreville,
VA/Paul VI) was also a key performer in the second half
for Pace scoring 12 of his 16 points in the second frame, to go
along with his game-high seven rebounds. Howard was the third
Setter in double figures as he contributed with 14 points and a
game-high five assists.
UMass Lowell also had three players in double figure scoring led
by Victor Colon, who scored a team-high 17 points, going 7-for-15
from the field. Dashon Harper and Peter Monfort were the other
Riverhawks in double digits with 14 and 10 respectively. Harper
recorded a team-high six rebounds
Pace held the rebounding edge over UMass Lowell 37-33.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, January
17th, as they host the Golden Knights of Saint Rose
College in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. Pace will be looking to even the season series with
Saint Rose, as the Golden Knights defeated the Setters earlier this
season, 83-62, on December 5th in Albany, NY.
