ANSELM
MANCHESTER, NH - At Grappone Stadium on Saturday
afternoon, the Pace University football team won a tight defensive
struggle against Saint Anselm, by a final of 7-2. With the win, the
Setters improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10. The 3-1
start is the best start for the Setters since 1999. The Hawks fall
to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Hawks out gained the Setters (110-85) and had more first
downs (7-4) but lost the crucial turnover battle (6-1). After both
teams were held off the board in the first quarter, Pace got their
only seven points after a second quarter interception by
Dan Reilly (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) put the
Setters at the Saint Anselm 24-yard line. From there, it took three
plays for Pace to score, finished off by a P.J. Columbo
(Wallkill, NY/Wallkill) run of 3 yards to gain a 7-0 lead.
The Hawks' two points came in the fourth quarter as the ball was
snapped over the head of punter Adam Headley (Shelton, CT/Shelton) for Pace and he kicked
the ball out of his own end zone for a team safety. The Hawks were
unable to move the ball on the following free kick and turned the
ball over on downs during their last possession with 55 seconds
left to play.
The six interceptions in the game ties a Pace University record
set last week against Stonehill. Chris Anzano (Wyckoff,
NJ/Ramapo) had two interceptions to push his team lead to
six on the season. Anzano needs one more interception in the
Setters' final six games to tie the Pace single season
record. Erik Hubbard (Pittsburg, CA/Diablo Valley) (Pittsburg, CA/Diablo
Valley) also picked off a Saint Anselm pass, marking the
fourth consecutive game that he has done so. Joe Streany
(Croton, NY/Croton Harmon) and Brian Schuster (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place)
(Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) also had
interceptions in the game.
Pace returns to action when they host Bryant University on
Saturday, September 30, 2006 in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up
set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
