Box Score SETTERS WIN SEASON OPENER, 27-14
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Chris Anzano's
(Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) 56-yard punt return was the
exclamation point on the Pace University football team's 27-14 win
over Husson College in a non-conference match-up at Pace Field on
the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The win was the
first season opening win for Pace since the 2002 season.
Anzano had a banner day in his Setters debut. The senior
transfer from Fordham had five punt returns for 105 yards and three
kickoff returns for 99 yards. Anzano also had one
interception that he returned inside the Husson red zone to set up
a Setter touchdown.
Freshman quarterback Daniel Moyer's (Highstown, NJ/Notre Dame) (Highstown, NJ/Notre
Dame) debut at the helm of the Setters offense got off to
a rocky start as the first year quarterback making his first career
start had his first collegiate tipped and intercepted, resulting in
a 45-yard interception return by Husson's Shane Rogers (Portland,
ME). Things did not get easier for the freshman signal caller
as he threw his second interception of the day in his third series
behind center.
Following a four-and-out by Husson, Moyer would complete his
first collegiate pass, a 64-yard touchdown strike to senior
Joe Toronto (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn). After
a successful extra point attempt by Luigi Casale (White Plains, NY/Iona Prep) (White
Plains, NY/Iona Prep), the Setters led, 7-6.
Following several turnovers and almost an entire quarter of
sloppy field conditions, Husson's David Chase (Sabattus, ME) found
Tom Lasko (Lincoln, ME) in triple coverage on a 3rd and
Goal situation. Lasko made an outstanding catch and a
two-point conversion put Husson on top, 14-7, heading into
halftime.
Five minutes into the 2nd half, Anzano picked off a
Chase pass at the Husson 34 yard line and returned it to the
Eagles' 22-yard line. Moyer then completed back-to-back
passes to Anthony Roberts (Tampa, FL/Duchess C.C.) (Tampa, FL/Duchess C.C.)
and Rick Southard (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) to put
Pace on Husson's 10-yard line. After Moyer rushed for three
yards, he was replaced by senior Adam Headley (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton,
CT/Shelton). Senior co-captain Scott
Shuryn's (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) 5-yard run put
Pace on Husson's 2-yard line on 3rd and goal.
Headley then faked the run up the middle and took a naked bootleg
to the right side of the endzone. Headley was able to outrun
the Eagles' linebacker and score. Casale's extra point
attempt was once again successful, tying the game.
Following a four-and-out by Husson on the next set of downs,
Pace ran six plays before they too were forced to punt.
Casale's 36-yard punt found Husson's Bryan Biggers (Orlando, FL) on
the Eagles' 5-yard line. Biggers couldn't handle the punt,
resulting in a fumble recovery by Pace freshman Greg Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley)
(Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) on Hussone 5-yard
line. After a pair of broke plays, Shuryn once again
bulldozed the Eagles' defensive line, setting Pace up inside
Husson's 2-yard line. Sophomore Danny Lexandra (Harriman, NY/Monroe-Woodbury)
(Herriman, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) then rushed for a 2-yard
touchdown, the first of his career, to put Pace on top,
21-14.
The next five drives resulted in turnovers for both teams before
Anzano returned a Jon Tefft (Lisbon, ME) 37-yard punt 56 yards for
a touchdown, giving Pace a 27-14 lead with less than seven minutes
to play.
Individually, Moyer was 8-for-25 for 109 yards and one
touchdown, while also throwing five interceptions and also being
sacked twice. Casale had eight punts for 285 yards including
three that dropped inside Husson's 20-yard line. Erik
Hubbard (Pittsburg, CA/Diablo Valley) had one interception
and one fumble recovery. Joseph Streany (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon) (Croton,
NY/Croton Harmon) led all defensive players with 11
tackles while Lee Robinson (New Milford, CT/New Milford) (New Milford, CT/New
Milford) had the Setters only sack of the day.
For Husson, Tefft intercepted two passes while Rogers had one
interception that resulted in a touchdown, two pass breakups and
three quarterback hurries. Rogers also broke-up two passes.
The Setters return to action when they travel to Brookville, NY
to take on L.I.U. - C.W. Post in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up
set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9th.
