MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO ALASKA-FAIRBANKS IN SEASON OPENER

The 2006 Disney's Division II Men's Tip-Off Classic

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla (Nov. 10) - The University of Alaska-Fairbanks (Fairbanks, AK) defeated Pace University (Pleasantville, NY), 96-91 at the 2006 Disney's Division II Men's Tip Off Classic basketball tournament on Friday evening at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.  

Jushay Rockett recorded his second straight double-double to start the season with game-high in points (27) and rebounds (12) to lead UA-Fairbanks (1-0).  Barry Barnes Jr. added 25 points (16 in the second half) on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Kenny Barker and Jordan Hayter contributed with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Pace University (0-1) took the early lead with a 16-6 run to start the game.  The Nanooks scored 15 of the next 21 points to tie the score at the 8:25 mark of the first half. The rest of the half was pretty much nip-and-tuck with five ties before UA-Fairbanks took the one-point lead into intermission.  The Setters started the second half on a 17-6 run in the first four and a half minutes to take a 10-point lead.  The Nanooks came back, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to tie the score at 58-58.  The game went back-and-forth with six ties until UA-Fairbanks scored 9 of the final 13 points for the five-point victory.

Gibralter White scored 20 points to lead Pace University and  Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

UA-Fairbanks will next play North Georgia College & State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., while Pace University looks to rebound versus Southern Indiana at 6:30 p.m.
