Box Score SETTERS SHUT OUT AS OWLS CRUISE TO 28-0 WIN
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University football
team lost to Southern Connecticut State University, 28-0, in a
Northeast-10 Conference match-up at Pace Field on the Pleasantville
campus of Pace University. Southern Connecticut improves to
4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference while Pace falls
to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Both teams struggled to score early on as the game's first
points were not scored until there was just over a minute to play
in the half. After a 24 yard punt return by SCSU's Marlon
Thornton to Pace's 33-yard line, the Setters were tagged with a
15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that put Southern
Connecticut on Pace's 18 yard line with just under six minutes to
play. On second and goal from four yards out, Thornton would
fumble the ball into Pace's endzone. After Jonathon Jones (Dover, NH/Bridgton Academy) (Derry,
NH/Brigton Academy) recovered the fumble, Pace started their drive
from their own 20 yard line.
After a pair of completions by freshman quarterback Daniel Moyer (Highstown, NJ/Notre Dame)
(Highstown, NJ/Notre Dame), Moyer would pick up another 12 yards to
move Pace to their own 46-yard line. After an incomplete pass
by Moyer, the freshman quarterback was picked off by the Owls'
Rossi Patterson at the Southern Connecticut 41 yard line. Patterson
would return the interception 59 yards to give SCSU a 6-0 lead
heading into halftime.
It took only four plays into the second half for Southern
Connecticut to find the end zone again. Steve Armstrong would
hook up with Chris Bergeski for a 54-yard touchdown to give
Southern Connecticut a 14-0 lead.
Following a blocked punt by the Owls' Ron Turner that was
recovered by Patterson, Armstrong would score on a two-yard draw
with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter to put
SCSU on top, 20-8. Patterson would pick off Moyer for the
second time at the eight minute mark, setting up a 19-yard
touchdown run by Brandon Toles to give SCSU a 28-0 lead.
For the game, Patterson totaled a game-high nine tackles,
including one for a loss. He also had two interceptions and one
pass break-up on the day. Toles finished with 21 carries for
113 yards while Armstrong was 8-for-22 for 129 yards and two
interceptions.
For Pace, Moyer finished the day at 15-for-29 for 162 yards and
three interceptions. Moyer was sacked five times in the
game. Chris Anzano (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) picked off his
8th pass of the season, breaking the previous
single-season record held of seven set by Shaun Johnson in
2000. It was also the 21st of the season for Pace,
passing the all-time high of 20 held by the 1982 Setters squad.
Defensively, Jones would finish with three tackles as well as one
fumble recovery and one interception for Pace.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, October 21, 2006 when
they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International
College in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up scheduled for a 1:00
p.m. kickoff.
