44-14
PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University football team broke a
14-game losing streak that began on November 8, 2003 with a 44-14
win today over Saint Anselm College. The Setters took the
lead early, scoring three times in the first quarter, and never
gave up a lead. The Setters' 44-point effort is the
most for a Pace squad since 1987 when they scored 53 points against
Trenton State. The 30-point win is the largest margin of
victory since 1996 when the Setters defeated Assumption 34-0.
Pace improves to 1-2 overall and against Northeast-10 Conference
teams while Saint Anselm drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the
NE-10.
The Setters jumped out to an early lead after a Dan Snyder
(Bellport, NY) interception on the Saint Anselm 42 yard line.
Snyder would return the ball to the Hawks' 16-yard
line. After a loss of yards on a run and an incomplete pass,
senior quarterback Mike Timmerman (Saddle Brook, NJ) found freshman
Jarrett Perry (Jamaica, NY) for a 23-yard touchdown strike.
It was Timmerman's first touchdown pass of the season, and
Perry's first TD reception for his collegiate
career.
On Saint Anselm's next possession, Nick Liguori (Toms River,
NJ) stripped the Hawks' Mike Donoghue with Jarett Foster
(Nanuet, NY) recovering the fumble on the Saint Anselm 27 yard
line. After a Reuben Sullins' (New Rochelle, NY) 17-yard run
was called back due to a hold, Timmerman found Dan Khahaifa
(Newburgh, NY) for a 36-yard reception that put the Setters on the
Hawks 1-yard line. Scott Shuryn (Pompton Lakes, NJ) would
then pound the ball in from a yard out for his first touchdown of
the season. Shuryn would score again in the 2nd quarter
on a 2-yard run.
Sullins also scored for the Setters on a 12-yard run, as did
Mitchell Backus (North Babylon, NY) from 2-yards out. The
Setters' Luigi Casale (White Plains, NY) hit his first
collegiate field goal from 27-yards out and Timmerman had a
touchdown run of 59 yards.
For Saint Anselm, Mike Wojtas scored on a 27-yard pass from
Hawks' quarterback Shane Dinagen. Donoghue also scored
on a 5-yard run with 23 seconds remaining in the half. The
Setters would hold Saint Anselm scoreless in the 2nd
half.
The Setter defense had a solid showing against the Hawks, coming
away with five interceptions and sacking Dinagen eight times.
Snyder totaled eight tackles, including two for a loss with a sack
and an interception. Ernst Turnier (Stratford, CT) and Foster
each had two sacks in the game. Erik Hubbard (Pittsburg, CA)
had a break-out game, finishing with his first interception as a
Setter while also breaking up two passes. Dan Sullivan
(Levittown, NY), Jon Jones (Dover, NH) and Jawann Brown (Cliffword,
NJ) all came away with picks as well.
Timmerman had arguably his top game as a Setter, racking up 164
yards on 11 rushes including his fourth rushing touchdown of the
season. In the pocket, Timmerman was 13-for-30 for 143 yards
and one touchdown pass. Seven different Setters carried the ball,
racking up 291 yards on 46 rushes on the day. The Setters
finished with 434 total yards to Saint Anselm's
191.
