Box Score FIRST HALF TIE SLIPS AWAY AS SETTERS FALL, 33-14, TO BENTLEY
LEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University football showed early
signs of pulling an upset win over Bentley College, pulling into
halftime tied at 14-14. A strong second half by the Falcons
gave them the Northeast-10 Conference win, 33-14, in Pleasantville,
NY. Pace drops to 1-4 overall and in NE-10 play while Bentley
improves to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast-10.
Bentley scored first when Derrick Marsan (Methuen, MA) picked off
an Adam Headley (Shelton, CT) pass from five yards out and returned
it for the Falcons' first touchdown of the day. Pace
would bounce back on the ensuing possession as Headley led the
Setter attack on a six-play, 71-yard drive capped off by a Mitchell
Backus (North Babylon, NY) touchdown run from 11-yards
out.
With the Falcons driving on their next possession, Pace senior
defensive back Jim Papcun (Hazlet, NJ) picked off a pass from
Bentley's Kelley Rowe (Toledo, OH) on the 50-yard line.
Papcun would return the ball to the Bentley 3-yard line with just
under nine minutes to play in the half. After two failed dive
attempts, Setter quarterback Mike Timmerman (Saddle Brook, NJ), who
didn't start due for the first time this season, rushed for a
3-yard score on the QB keeper to give Pace a 14-7 lead with 6:25
remaining in the half.
Rowe would put together an impressive drive to close out the half,
taking Bentley down the field on a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
Rowe would cap off the 4-minute drive with a 17-yard touchdown run
to tie the game at 14-14 to head into the half.
The second half was all Bentley as a 20-yard touchdown pass from
Rowe to Kristopher Lake (Dudley, MA) would put the Falcons up for
good at 20-14. Bentley quarterback John White (Kingston, MA)
would score on an 8-yard run and Rowe would hook up with Jehan
Murphy (Chelmsford, MA) on a 31-yard touchdown pass to close out
the game, 33-14.
Offensively, Bentley's Rowe was 17-for-32 for 230 yards and
two touchdown passes while also throwing two interceptions.
Rowe also led the Bentley rushing attack with 16 carries for 67
yards and one touchdown. The Falcons' Lake had seven
catches for 107 yards and one touchdown. For Pace,
Headley and Timmerman combined for a 14-for-35 day for 130 yards
with neither quarterback breaking 80 yards in the air. Backus
had 20 carries for 53 yards, as well as three receptions for 38
yards on the day.
Defensively, Pace's Joe Streany (Croton, NY) led all players
with 14 tackles. Dan Sullivan (Levittown, NY) had an
outstanding game, finishing with 10 tackles, including 1.5 for a
loss, an interception and one sack. Senior Jarett Foster
(Nanuet, NY) finished with two sacks and one QB hurry, while
freshman run-stopper Brian Schuster (Miller Place, NY) had two
sacks and one fumble recovery. Papcun also had nine tackles
to go along with his interception that set up a Setter
touchdown.
