SPRINGFIELD, MA. – On Sunday, Pace University Baseball wrapped up its Northeast 10 Conference (NE10) series against American International College falling 7-6 in a seven-inning series finale and 11-4 in the second game to drop three of four on the weekend. The Setters carried a multi-run lead into the later innings of game one before a decisive sixth-inning rally shifted momentum, while American International used a pair of big innings in game two to pull away. With under a month remaining in the regular season and just 14 games left on the schedule, the Blue and Gold move to 14-18 overall and 9-12 in NE10 play.
Game One (7 innings)
Pace came out aggressive in the seven-inning opener, scoring three runs in the first inning to take early control.
Anthony Depetro delivered a two-run double, and
Brayden Sweppenhiser added a sacrifice fly to give the Setters a 3-0 lead.
American International answered in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Blue and Gold continued to apply pressure. Pace added a run in the fifth before extending the lead to 6-2 in the sixth, with
Rocco Cimino and
Justin Crispino each driving in runs during the stretch.
The momentum shifted in the bottom half of the sixth inning, as American International capitalized on walks and timely hitting to score five runs and take a 7-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets turned a four-run deficit into a one-run advantage in a decisive frame that changed the game.
Pace looked to respond in the final inning but was unable to generate a rally. Despite out-hitting American International 8-5, the Setters could not overcome the late surge.
Game Two
The Setters remained competitive early in the second game, working within striking distance through the middle innings. Pace trailed just 3-2 through five innings, keeping pressure on the Yellow Jackets.
American International broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs to extend the lead. The Yellow Jackets added four more runs in the seventh to create separation and secure the 11-4 victory.
Manny Carreras highlighted the offensive effort with a home run, while
Brayden Sweppenhiser recorded three hits. The Setters showed flashes offensively but were unable to contain the late surge from American International.
The Setters hit the road on Wednesday for a Northeast 10 Conference (NE10) match-up against Adelphi University, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
