Setters Close Regular Season with Sweep over SCSU on Senior Day

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Behind a strong outing from the pitching staff and consistent offense on Senior Day, Pace baseball picked up the series sweep over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field.

With a 5-0 shutout win in game one and a 3-2 victory in game two, the three-game sweep pushes the Setters' record to 23–20 overall and 10–8 in NE10 play as the regular season came to an end.

Game One
  • Justin Dressler got the start for the Setters and delivered one of his best performances of the season. The SCSU lineup never found its rhythm against the Setters' starter, as Dressler induced weak contact and worked efficiently through the order.
  • The Setters struck first in the bottom of the third inning. After loading the bases, Anthony Labita got Pace on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Benjamin Tullo. Moments later, Dominic Rivara showed patience at the plate and drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, giving the Setters an early 2–0 lead.
  • Pace added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Mason Baronian, then tacked on two more in the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by an RBI single from Luke Rivara and another productive at-bat from Baronian, who reached base three times.
  • On the mound, the bullpen continued the tone set by Dressler. Brendan McCann entered in the sixth and tossed two shutout innings, surrendering only two hits.
  • Senior right-hander Anthony Apollaro closed the door with a clean eighth and ninth, sealing the combined shutout with two strikeouts and no walks allowed over his two innings of work. At the game's end, the Setters held a 5-0 lead to claim the series victory in game two of the three-game set.
Game Two (7 innings game called due to weather)
  • A clutch swing from Anthony Labita and a strong bullpen effort helped Pace baseball edge out Southern Connecticut, 3–2. Labita drove in all three of Pace's runs, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning. The blast came just before a weather delay halted play in the top of the seventh.
  • After a nearly three-hour delay, the game was eventually called due to inclement weather.
  • Aidan Kempf started on the mound, while Nick Huchro, Robert Gilchrist, and Cristian Rodriguez combined for 5.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Rodriguez earned the win with two clean frames to close it out as the game concluded with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Box Score Insights
  • Labita knocked a home run and three RBIs in the day.
  • Luke Rivara had a team-high three hits, with two RBIs.
  • On the mound, Dressler tossed five scoreless innings with three strikeouts while McCann (3.0 IP, 0 ER) and Rodriguez (2.0 IP, 2K's) had strong outings out of the bullpen.
Up Next (Northeast-10 Conference Championship First Round)
The Setters now prepare for the postseason, which kicks off next Tuesday with their opponent still to be determined.
