No. 17 Softball Splits with Molloy to End Record Setting Win Streak

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – On Wednesday afternoon, No. 17 Pace Softball secured a split against Molloy University, winning 7-0, and then falling 8-6. The game two loss marks the first defeat for the Setters in 27 games as their program-best winning streak has come to an end.

With Wednesday's action in the books, the Blue and Gold move to 33-9 overall and remain an undefeated 16-0 within the Northeast-10 (NE10) Conference.

Game One
  • NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Week, Gisselle Garcia, took the circle in game one of the twin-bill as she continued her dominant pitching for the Blue and Gold. To kick off the contest, the senior fanned Molloy's first three batters to pick up where she left off last week.
  • After the scoreless opening inning, RBIs from Sophie Valle, and Jade Alvarado pushed the Setters ahead 2-0 over the Lions. Following the two-run inning, the Setters found success at the plate once again in the top half of the third. With an infield single from Riley Jenkins, Pace increased its advantage to 3-0.
  • In the next three innings, Garcia allowed no runners to reach base as the 3-0 score moved into the sixth inning. In the top half of the inning, three runs crossed the plate, led by a two-RBI triple from Brianna Shea. In the next inning, Shea added to her RBI total with a single up the middle, putting the Setters on top 7-0 on the road.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Garcia walked back into the circle with an opportunity to toss a perfect game. However, with two outs, the Lions found a gap in the outfield for their first and only hit of the contest as Garcia's chance at perfection ended just short.
  • Regardless of Molloy's late double, the Setters and Garcia went on to close out the Lions in game one, 7-0, for their 27th consecutive victory and 19th shutout.
Game Two
  • After three innings of play, the Setters clutched onto a three-run advantage over the Lions, led by RBIs from Riley Jenkins, Willa Poplawski, and Raelle Gorman.
  • Despite the early offensive charge, Molloy responded back with a crooked number in the bottom of the third. Six runs crossed the plate as the Lions took a 6-3 lead into the fourth inning.
  • With two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for the home squad, the Setters' deficit was too significant to overcome as they fell for the first time in 27 games, by a final score of 8-6.
Box Score Insights
  • Shea had a strong day at the plate, finishing with three total RBIs during a 3-for-6 effort.
  • Gorman led the team with four hits (4-for-8, 1 RBI) in the doubleheader, and during game one, the junior outfielder surpassed 100 base-knocks in her Setter career.
  • Mikayla Hughes launched her first collegiate home run, driving a pitch over the right field wall in game two.
  • Freshman Nikki Chong had a breakout performance, posting three hits in game two.
  • Garcia earned her 19th win in the circle as she now sits just one victory away from her career high from last season and eight from the single-season program record. The senior tallied 15 strikeouts in game one, surrendering only one hit to the Lions' lineup.
Up Next (Southern New Hampshire University)
As the regular season continues to wind down, the Setters now prepare for their Senior Day set for this Friday at 2:00 p.m. versus Southern New Hampshire University.
