PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace University Women's Basketball put together a strong effort on Saturday afternoon but was unable to fully overcome an early deficit, falling 55–47 to Adelphi University inside the Goldstein Fitness Center. The setback moves the Setters to 4–5 overall and 1–2 in conference play.
The game opened as a defensive battle, with both teams working through early possessions and scoring coming at a premium. Adelphi was able to build a slim advantage in the opening quarter, while Pace leaned on its defensive intensity to stay within reach.
LyNeta Brand established an early presence around the basket, and
Anisa Akinola helped keep the Blue and Gold close at the free-throw line, but Pace trailed 13-8 after the first 10 minutes.
Pace continued to battle in the second quarter, matching Adelphi's physicality and stringing together defensive stops.
Jaylyn Chorba brought energy off the bench, while
Grace Ziogas was active on the glass and in transition. Despite the effort, Adelphi found timely baskets late in the half, and the Setters went into the locker room facing a 26–18 deficit.
The Blue and Gold delivered their strongest stretch coming out of halftime. Ziogas opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, sparking a run that brought renewed energy to the home crowd. Brand and Akinola attacked the paint, and Pace's defensive pressure forced key turnovers that trimmed the margin to one possession midway through the period. Adelphi responded late in the quarter, however, regaining separation and entering the fourth with a 39–31 lead.
Pace refused to go away in the final 10 minutes, continuing to push and cutting the deficit to four on multiple occasions. Brand finished strong inside, Ziogas remained aggressive offensively, and the Setters shot their best percentage of the game in the fourth quarter. Pace also stayed perfect at the free-throw line, but Adelphi answered each rally with timely baskets and closed out the contest from the stripe. Late scores from Chorba and Akinola capped the effort as the Setters battled to the final horn.
Brand and Akinola led Pace with 12 points apiece, with Akinola also pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
The Setters will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, returning home to the Goldstein Fitness Center to host Bridgeport University at 5:30 p.m.
