Setters Outmatched by Molloy in First Round of NCAA Tournament

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In the opening round of the NCAA DII softball championship, the Pace University softball team fell to Molloy University, 7-0. The Setters return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon hoping to keep their season alive.

After two innings of scoreless softball, Molloy tallied the first run of the contest in the top of the third. Coming off a double down the line, the Lions snagged the early advantage, 1-0.

Molloy's starting pitcher Brianna Macias kept Pace's bats quiet as the Setters managed only two base knocks in the first three innings. Moving into the fourth, Pace trailed by one run, but it would be the Lions who would take control of the game.

In the top of the fourth, Molloy rallied to bring across five runs in the inning. Five Lion hits lead to a 6-0 lead for Molloy heading into the fifth. The Setters failed to answer as Macias continued to have her way in the circle.

In the sixth inning, Molloy extended their lead to seven with a base-knock to left field leaving Pace with a substantial deficit in the final innings. In the bottom of the sixth and seventh the Setters were held to no runs as Molloy cruised to a 7-0 win over the Blue and Gold.

Pace will look to get back on track tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. as they take on the University of Bridgeport back at Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City, N.Y.
