NEW HAVEN, CT – To begin their final series of the 2024 regular season, the Pace University baseball team was bested by Southern Connecticut State University, 6-1. Following the loss, the Setters move to 25-17 overall, and 15-10 in the Northeast-10.
Other than a lone RBI from Mason Baronian in the sixth, the Setters were shut down at the plate by Southern Connecticut State. The Blue and Gold managed one run compared to the Owl's six in the contest as pitcher Mike Szturma presented a difficult challenge for Pace's bats.
Dan Brown started on the mound for the Setters and produced a solid outing on the road. The senior went five innings allowing one run while striking out seven batters before the bullpen took over pitching duties.
The game remained tied 1-1 until Southern Connecticut State found success late in the contest. After taking the lead with one run in the sixth the Owls poured on two in each of the next two innings to extend their lead to 6-1. The five-run advantage was enough for the home squad to take home the win and the Setters fell 6-1 in game one of the three-game set.
Errors got the best of the Setters as three of the Owl's runs were unearned due to fielding errors. Despite knocking one more hit than Southern Connecticut State the Setters failed to bring home runs consistently in the match-up. Throughout the nine-inning affair, Pace left eight runners stranded on the base paths.
Brayden Sweppenhiser led the Setters with his 2-for-4 performance. Anthony Labita (1-for-4, 1 run) and Baronian (1-for-4, 1 RBI) attributed to the one run scored for the Blue and Gold.
Tomorrow at noon, the Setters wrap up their three-game series against Southern Connecticut State with a doubleheader match-up in New Haven, CT. The first pitch of game one is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 p.m.
