PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – All encores must come to an end, and the No. 1 Pace University women's lacrosse team's encore season was forced to come to an end on Saturday at Northwell Stadium in the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal, falling to No. 4 Adelphi University, 13-10.
Pace suffers its first loss in over a calendar year, finishing the 2024 season with a 21-1 record. This was the third meeting this year between Adelphi and Pace.
The difference in today's heavyweight battle was in the draw circle, where Adelphi decimated the Setters, 23-4 in the circle.
Pace's offense delivered early in the first quarter, jumping out to a 4-1 lead thanks to goals from
Nikki Mottes,
Margaret Flocco,
Annie Sheehan, and
Angelina Porcello.
The Panthers tied the game up early in the second quarter and the two teams traded goals for the rest of the first half, entering halftime at a 7-7 stalemate. The same script was followed in the third, with the turning point coming in the final quarter.
Adelphi fired a pair of women-up goals from Alexandra Leggio and Ashley Kolomechuck to take a two-goal lead. Combined with the dominance on draws and strong play from goalie Jillian McFadden, the Panthers held off the Setters.
Mottes finished the game with a hat trick while Porcello concluded her collegiate career with three assists and one goal.
