PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Northeast 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship trophy will live in Pleasantville as the No. 1 Pace University women's lacrosse team made history Saturday, defeating No. 4 Adelphi University, 16-14.
Pace completes a perfect regular season and conference tournament, going to 20-0 overall.
The theme of the first half was overwhelming offense. Pace got the offense started, logging the first two goals thanks to
Annie Sheehan and
Katie Long converting on a women-up opportunity to take an early 2-0 lead. The Panthers were not deterred and rattled off three goals to gain a slim 3-2 advantage. The first quarter closed with
Sydney Juvelier and
Mackenzie Carita finding the back of the cage to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.
Both offenses exploded in the second, as the teams traded goals but Adelphi outscored Pace, 8-7 in the quarter to take an 11-9 advantage into halftime. For Adelphi, six different Panthers scored goals with Tamia Lawson and Ashley Kolomechuk scoring two apiece. Carita and Long scored two for the Blue and Gold, while Sheehan, Juvelier and
Margaret Flocco scored one.
Faced with a two-goal deficit, the Setter defense clamped down while the offense kept their feet on the gas. The defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard while forcing seven turnovers and scoring four times. Sheehan provided a women-up goal and an even-strength goal while Juvelier and
Angelina Porcello found the twine to run the lead up to 15-11.
Adelphi had one final push in them. Kerrin Heuser converted a women-up opportunity to cut the lead to three. It got down to two thanks to Rita Sefransky connecting on a free position shot.
Margaret Flocco responded with a free position goal of her own with 7:05 left. One more goal went to Adelphi with 6:24 left to set the stage for the final minutes.
The defense turned in a pair of stops and with 2:22 left, Pace completed a clear and started to burn the clock. With the shot clock winding down, Porcello fired a shot wide but
Nikki Mottes was there to secure the ground ball, and Pace called a timeout. Pace killed the remaining time and celebrated as they etched their names in the program's history books.
Samantha Tanguay, Porcello, and Mottes all earned All-Tournament honors while Porcello was named MVP.
In the game, Sheehan finished with four goals while Mottes and Porcello each assisted on five goals. Porcello added one goal, six ground balls, four draws, and six draws. Long, Juvelier, and Carita each turned in hat tricks.
Pace awaits the results of the NCAA Division II Selection Show to find out their fate in the upcoming NCAA Championship. The show is set for Sunday, May 12 at 8:30 p.m.
