Flocco's Heroics Hold off RV Mercy in Double OT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the No. 1 Pace University women's lacrosse team made the short trip to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to face off with RV Mercy University. The Setters found themselves in need of a hero in a double overtime battle, and that hero was Margaret Flocco as she scored the game-winning goal helping Pace escape Mercy, 12-11.

Pace stays perfect, improving to 10-0 on the year as they enter their bye week with the next game being at No. 3 Adelphi University next week.

Freshman Lindsay Radmann got the offense going for the Setters, scoring the first goal of the game after she took a pass from Mackenzie Carita and weaved her way through traffic to find the back of the net.

After a Mercy goal to tie the game at 1-1, Sydney Juvelier registered back-to-back goals off assists from Nikki Mottes and Carita to take a 3-1 lead. Once again, the home team found the back of the net, Pace responded with two goals of their own thanks to Mottes and Angelina Porcello. Porcello scored again as the first quarter closed to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter.

Mottes kept the momentum in favor of the Blue and Gold, firing a shot from about 10 yards from the cage and beating the goalie to grow the lead to 7-3. Mercy scored with five minutes left in what would be a quiet quarter for both offenses as the Blue and Gold took a 7-4 lead into the half. Both goalies, Samantha Tanguay for Pace and Olivia Maute for Mercy each stopped four shots.

In the third quarter, which started with Mercy changing goalies and bringing in Olivia LaMonica, the Mavericks struck first thanks to the stick of Lenna Moussa who beat Tanguay to cut the lead to two, 7-5. The offensive pressure was kept up as the lead was cut to one, 7-6 a couple of minutes later, and would eventually tie the game at 7-7 thanks to Moussa. Sydney Corley swung the lead over to Mercy with 8:16 left in the third to take a slim 8-7 lead.

In need of a goal, head coach Tricia Molfetta turned to one of the best players in NCAA Division II, Angelina Porcello, who stopped the bleeding by beating the goalie to the far post with just under three minutes left in the third to make the score 9-8. In the ensuing possession, Porcello found Radman who had a wide-open path to the cage, and fired a shot low into the back of the net to tie the game at 9-9. Annie Sheehan returned to the lead to Pace with 31 seconds left in the third quarter after a Mavericks yellow card to take a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mercy tied the game with the first goal of the fourth quarter by getting a shot between Tanguay to make the score 10-10. Mercy scored what appeared to be the game-winning goal with under four minutes left, but Pace would not go away. After calling a pair of timeouts, Juvelier fired a shot past the Mercy goalie with 28 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.

In the back half of the first overtime, Mercy appeared to have won but failed a stick check which erased the goal, and kept the game going. In the second overtime, Flocco would bury a shot in traffic, off a feed from Audrey Colucci to escape the Mavericks.

Porcello and Juvelier each netted three goals while Radmann and Mottes each fired off two. Alexandra Quinn caused a team-high five turnovers while securing four ground balls.
