Pace Dominates Game One, Drops Game Two Against Assumption

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Saturday afternoon, the Pace University softball team cruised to a 13-0 win in game one over Assumption University and then fell in game two, 3-2. The Setters move to 20-10 overall, and 8-4 in the Northeast-10.

Game One (5 innings)

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Blue and Gold took command of the contest early and never looked back. Three runs crossed the plate in the first inning behind an RBI from Riley Jenkins and two RBI from Willa Poplawski. With a 3-0 advantage, Pace took control with Gisselle Garcia in the circle.

In the second, an Alexa Borino double to center field increased Pace's lead to 4-0. Two batters later, Brianna Shea sliced a single up the middle to score another run building the Setter lead to five.

After tallying five runs in the first two innings, the Setters offense exploded for six in the third. The two through four batters all knocked in a run in the rally extending Pace's lead to 11-0. The Setters added two more in the fourth and then wrapped up the win in the fifth, with a final score of 13-0.

The Setters produced 12 hits in the five-inning affair, scoring at least two runs in every inning. Borino and Shea lead the way with three hits and three RBI each.

In game one, Garcia tallied ten strikeouts in a five-inning complete game no-hitter. She allowed one hit while striking out at least two batters in each inning she pitched.

Game Two

In game two, Assumption found success early on driving home a run off an error from Pace. The Setters answered quickly in the next half-inning with a sacrifice fly from Shea to tie the game, 1-1. Before the end of the first, Jenkins added another run to the board with a single through the left side to give Pace a 2-1 lead.

Both sides remained quiet offensively in the second and third to push the 2-1 Pace lead into the third inning. Assumption capitalized on some effective base running in the top half of the fourth to bring home another run tying the game, 2-2.

In the next inning, the Greyhounds used a two-out double to take the lead 3-2 over Pace. In their next three chances at the plate, Pace failed to bring a run across dropping game two, 3-2.

Up Next

The Setters return to the Pace Softball Field tomorrow at noon, for a doubleheader against Bentley University.
