PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Saturday afternoon, the Pace University softball team split the twin-bill with Franklin Pierce University winning game one, 7-3, and dropping game two, 1-3. The Setters move to 14-6 overall, and 3-1 in the Northeast-10.
Game One
In the first game of the doubleheader at the Pace Softball Field, the Setters made an early statement with a long home run from Riley Jenkins in the second inning. The sophomore continues to impact the heart of the batting order for Pace as she brought home the first two runs of the day with her first homer of the season.
In the next inning, Raelle Gorman knocked in another run for Pace with an infield single to extend the lead to 3-0. With junior pitcher Gisselle Garcia cruising through Franklin Pierce's lineup, the Setters had control of the contest early on.
With four runs in the fourth inning, the Blue and Gold extended their lead over Franklin Pierce to 7-0. Gorman accounted for two RBIs in the inning while Sophie Valle and Madison Picerno tallied one RBI each.
In the fifth, the Setters ran into trouble and surrendered three runs to the visitors, bringing the score to 7-3. However, neither side brought a run across in the final two innings as the game concluded with a 7-3 final.
Garcia had a productive outing for the Setters, pitching seven innings while striking out six total batters. Currently, the junior ranks in the top ten for the nation in strikeouts per seven innings averaging just over ten. At the plate, Gorman led the way for Pace going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader needed more than seven innings as Franklin Pierce rallied at the end of the contest to capture the 3-1 win over Pace. The Ravens took advantage of Pace's errors in the tenth to capture the game two victory. The Blue and Gold had one final chance to tie the match-up in the bottom of the tenth but failed to capitalize.
In the tight-knit affair that went ten innings, Pace missed out on several opportunities to put away Franklin Pierce coming up short of taking both games of the doubleheader.
Anna Acevedo did all she could to fend off the Franklin Pierce offense pitching ten total innings allowing three hits, and one earned run while registering eight strikeouts, including her 200th career punchout.
