Caldwell Defeats Baseball 8-5 in Road Matchup

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team was defeated by Caldwell University 8-5 Wednesday, April 26. The Setters rallied after an early deficit for the second straight game, but again came up just short.

Caldwell (14-23) took the lead early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. After a scoreless first, Noah Putney put up an RBI double in the second and grand slam in the third. An RBI double by Christopher Bayo and a bases-loaded walk gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead after three.

The Setters (24-15, 4-8 NE10) got to work in the fourth, getting a two-out RBI single from sophomore outfielder Josh Miller (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) to get their first run on the board.

Pace then rallied for three more runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to three. A walk by grad student outfielder Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) with the bases loaded forced in a run, followed by grad student outfielder Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) driving one in with an RBI fielder's choice. Sophomore shortstop Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) added one more run for the visitors in the inning, driving a run-scoring single down the left field line to make it a 7-4 game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Caldwell was able to add one more run on another bases loaded walk. Pace loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out, giving them a chance to cut into the lead. McCabe provided a sacrifice fly to score one run, but that was all the Setters came up with as they left a pair stranded. Pace was unable to push across the tying runs in the ninth as the Cougars held them off for an 8-5 victory.
