No. 14 Adelphi Defeats Softball in Conference Doubleheader Action

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team was defeated by nationally ranked No. 14 Adelphi University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 25. The Setters dropped game one by a 1-0 score, then lost 6-3 in the late game.

Game One: Adelphi 1, Pace 0

Both pitchers were in control to start the day, as junior Anna Acevedo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Lindsey Hibbs each limited their opponents over the first two innings. Adelphi (37-6, 17-3 NE10) managed to get a runner in scoring position in the first, but Acevedo worked out of it to keep the game scoreless.

Pace (22-22. 11-9 NE10) got its first hit in the third but couldn't build on it as Hibbs set down the next three batters in order.

Adelphi broke through for the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, getting two singles to put runners on first and third with two out. Jaden Farhat then delivered an RBI single, giving the home team a 1-0 lead heading to the fifth.

Neither team picked up a hit in the fifth inning, and the Setters were turned aside in order in the sixth as well. After the Panthers went down 1-2-3 in the home half, Pace was unable to push across the tying run in the seventh as Adelphi took a 1-0 victory.

Game Two: Adelphi 6, Pace 3

Adelphi took the early lead in game two, putting up three runs in the opening inning. After a squeeze play got the first run on the board, Courtney Wengryn connected on a two-run double to add another run. An RBI groundout brought in the third run of the inning as the Panthers jumped out to a three-run advantage after one.

The Setters came back with three runs in the top of the third to tie the game, starting with an RBI triple to centerfield by freshman first baseman Riley Jenkins (San Diego, Calif./University City) to make it a 3-1 game. She then came in to score on an RBI groundout by senior outfielder Arianna Guarracino (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley), cutting the deficit to one run. With two out and runners on first and second, an RBI single by junior Alexandra Tejeda (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) tied the game at three as Pace drew even.

The Panthers took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, getting a leadoff triple followed by an RBI single from Zee Zee Shreter. A run-scoring single by Alexa Scaripante extended the lead, giving home team a 5-3 lead. Acevedo then came on in relief, getting two straight outs to stop the bleeding.

Hibbs came back in to pitch in the fourth and went the rest of the way for the Panthers. The Setters were only able to pick up one hit off her, a single by senior outfielder Gwen Pederson (Sylmar, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) in the fifth.

Adelphi added one more run in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Angelina Kellogg, but Pace couldn't get anything going in the seventh as the Panthers won game two by a 6-3 final.
