EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Pace University women's lacrosse team defeated the number one ranked team in the country, as the Setters earned a 16-6 road victory over East Stroudsburg University Saturday, March 4.
The Setters (2-0) got out to an early lead following a goal by senior attack
Jolie Urraro (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) on a free position attempt. A few minutes later, Urraro connected on her second goal on as many shots, with junior midfielder
Angelina Porcello (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) providing the assist to put Pace ahead by two. But a pair of Warrior (1-1) goals in a 1:12 span tied the game at 2-2 with just under six minutes remaining. The Setters came right back though, getting a goal from grad student midfielder
Emma Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) to go ahead 3-2. The visitors then added another pair of goals before the end of the first, getting two goals in 1:33 from grad student midfielder
Aleya Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) and freshman midfielder
Mackenzie Carita (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) to take a 5-2 lead into the second.
After an early Warriors goal, Porcello then scored back-to-back goals for the Setters, giving Pace a 7-3 lead with 2:37 remaining in the period. East Stroudsburg added a late goal while playing down a player, cutting the lead to three at the half.
Porcello kept it up to start the third, scoring at the 4:16 mark to make it an 8-4 game. Pace then took over, scoring four more unanswered goals throughout the period. Urrao and Porcello each scored one, while senior attack
Sydney Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) scored a pair, giving the Setters a 12-4 lead over the No. 1 ranked team in the country heading to the fourth.
Urraro scored on an assist by Rafferty less than two minutes into the fourth, but the Warriors' Emily Mitarotonda, who scored three times on the day, answered with one of her own. Porcello, Juvelier and Rafferty each put in one during the final period, with the Setters allowing just one more the rest of the way as they earned an impressive 16-6 victory over the top-ranked Warriors.
Porcello led Pace in scoring on the day with five goals and an assist, while adding four ground balls and eight draw controls. Urraro scored four times and added two helpers, along with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Juvelier scored three times with two assists and two ground balls. Junior
Ashley Belfiore (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) got the win in net for the Setters, making three saves on the day.
