TAMPA, Fla. – The Pace University women's lacrosse team picked up another impressive victory Wednesday, March 15, as the No. 6/7 ranked Setters defeated No. 4 ranked University of Tampa 19-8 on the road.
Tampa (6-2) went in front with a goal just over a minute into the game, but Pace (3-1) came right back with goals by junior midfielder
Angelina Porcello (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and senior attack
Sydney Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) to take a 2-1 lead.
After the Spartans tied the game, Pace picked up two more, as Juvelier and grad student midfielder
Emma Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) each found the back of the net to give Pace a two-goal lead with 3:21 left in the first.
But Tampa responded again, netting two goals in a 2:20 span to tie it late in the period. However, in the final seconds, grad student midfielder
Kayla Conway (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) put one in for Pace to give the visitors a 5-4 lead after one.
The Setters took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 6-1. Conway got it started with a goal four minutes in, and Rafferty scored three goals in a span of 2:11. A goal from sophomore attack
Nikki Mottes (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made it a 10-4 game midway through the period.
Tampa got one with just under six minutes left, but a man-up goal by freshman defender
Katie Long (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) extended the lead to 11-5 going into halftime.
The Setters kept up their strong play in the third, shutting the Spartans out during the period. Senior attack
Jolie Urraro (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) scored a pair in the quarter, while Conway, Rafferty and grad student midfielder
Aleya Corretjer (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) had one goal apiece. Pace outscored Tampa 5-0 in the quarter, as the visitors took a 16-5 lead into the fourth.
The Spartans got a pair in the first five minutes to cut Pace's lead to nine, but the Setters then scored three straight. Urraro, Corretjer and senior attack
Katie Smaldone (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) each scored one to put Pace up by 12. Tamps scored a late goal, but the Setters finished out a strong performance with a 19-8 victory over the No. 4 team in the country.
On the night, Rafferty lead the Setters with five goals while also picking up two ground balls. Urraro and Conway each scored three times, with Juvelier and Corretjer each netting two. Juvelier also added an assist, while Corretjer had three assists and picked up two ground balls.
Porcello had one goal and two assists, while leading the team with five ground balls and causing two turnovers. Freshman
Samantha Tanguay (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) got the win in net, making five saves on the night.
