Pace Baseball 2023 Season Preview

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The first home athletic contests of the spring semester will be played by the Pace University baseball team as they host Saint Michael's College in the season-opening weekend. Due to weather and temperatures, the schedule has changed a few times and the squad will host just a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26.

2023 SCHEDULE
The Setters will start their new campaign with 12-straight home games. Pace will then begin its spring break with a four-game stretch in Florida. The Blue and Gold face Bentley (non-conference) for three matchups across March 11-13, and then St. Cloud State for a final contest in the Sunshine State.

The Setters' NE10 schedule is slated to start on March 25 with a four-game set at Saint Rose. Pace's first home NE10 series will take place the following weekend against New Haven (March 31-April 2).

LAST SEASON
The Blue and Gold posted a 23-20 record in 2022. Offense served as the catalyst for the Setters as they ranked third in the NE10 in batting average (.306) and fourth in on-base percentage (.392). Pace's 33 home runs in just 43 games marked its highest total in a season since 2002.

THE RETURNERS
Four Setters are back with the Blue and Gold after earning NE10 All-Conference honors a year ago.

Graduate students, Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) and Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy), were each named to the NE10's first team last season while senior Patrick Gleason (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) was tabbed to the conference's second team. Sophomore Mason Baronian (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) rounded out Pace's honorees with an All-Rookie selection.

McCabe posted one of the best offensive seasons in program history courtesy of a .359 batting average, 11 home runs and a .719 slugging percentage—all of which were team highs.

Jacobi, meanwhile, led the Setters with 45 RBIs and 57 total hits while batting .356.

Gleason served as Pace's top pitcher last season with a 2.19 ERA across 61.2 innings pitched. He also racked up a team-high 54 strikeouts and five complete games.

Baronian's debut campaign featured 40 starts with a .377 on-base percentage.

2023 PRESEASON POLL
The Setters were selected to finish fifth in the NE10's Southwest Division, according to the conference's preseason coaches poll released in early January. Adelphi and Southern New Hampshire were picked as the two favorites in the conference.

MAGNIFICENT MANNING
The winningest head coach in program history, Hank Manning ('90) is back in the dugout for his 23rd season this spring. A Setter alum, who made the Pace Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014, is also one of the best players in school history.

After finishing his professional career and coming back to Pleasantville, Manning has piloted Pace to nearly 500 wins during his tenure.
