NEW HAVEN, CT – Behind a 22-point effort by
Tower Lorde, the Pace University women's basketball team held off the University of New Haven Chargers Wednesday night, 46-43.
With the win, Pace stays perfect, moving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Northeast 10 play. The Setters return to action this coming Sunday with a road contest at St. Thomas Aquinas with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Blue and Gold emerged on top after the first quarter in what was a back-and-forth affair, 12-9. Pace scored the final four points of the quarter off baskets from
MacKenzie Martin and
Katumina Mansaray. The lead grew to nine when the team's entered the locker room for halftime, 25-16.
Immediately out of the gates in the second half
Ciara Collins got the lead up to double digits with a basket to make the score 27-16. After trading baskets, the Chargers turned in a 11-0 run to tie the game over the next four minutes that would be ended by a Lorde layup and-one. Lorde hit the free throw to regain the lead, 32-31 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. Pace took a two-point lead into the final 10 minutes.
In the first half of the final 10, the lead swung back to the Chargers and it would hold for a couple minutes until Lorde found the bottom of the net again to regain a one-point lead, 44-34, with two minutes left. The defense would seal the game, keeping UNH off the scoreboard for the rest of the evening.
Lorde's 22-points are the most she has scored since she put up a career-high 25 points against Adelphi last season. She was incredibly efficient from the floor, finishing 8-12 from the field and 6-8 from the charity stripe.
