NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Playing their first NE10 game of the season, the Pace University football team posted a 27-7 win at Southern Connecticut State on Friday night. The victory puts the Setters' record at 2-1 this year (1-0 in the NE10).
It was a dominant defense that piloted Pace against the Owls. The Blue and Gold allowed just six first downs and 172 yards of offense, while SCSU's only touchdown of the game came late in the fourth quarter.
The Setters also totaled three sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss in the game. Graduate captain
Nasier Givens (Newark, N.J./Orange) led the way with a team-high nine tackles, two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.
Senior
Evan Townsend-Henry (Norwalk, Conn./King) also supplied a sack while
Nate Ojugo (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.
Offensively, Pace focused on the rushing attack. The Setters totaled 56 carries for 220 yards and three touchdowns from three different runners.
Individually,
Nasir Robinson (Penns Grove, N.J./Penns Grove) piled up a team-high 83 rushing yards while
Casey Fernandez (Carver, Mass./Carver),
Carlton Aiken (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) and
Tyreek Smith (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) all tallied running touchdowns.
Speaking of Aiken, he finished 13-of-21 for 170 yards and a touchdown through the air. Wide receivers
Teddy Harper (East Orange, N.J./Depaul Catholic) and
Ramir Tann-Davis (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Eastside) combined for 111 of those yards on eight total catches.
Tann-Davis caught the Aiken touchdown from 21 yards out to give Pace a 27-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
