PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Beginning a four-game series at Finnerty Field, the Pace University baseball team tallied a doubleheader sweep of Saint Rose on Friday. The Setters' perfect day pushes their record to 17-11 overall, including an 8-5 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Game One – Pace 13, Saint Rose 1
It was a terrific all-around win in the opener for Pace. The Setters' entire lineup tallied hits while junior
Christian Aich (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) registered a gem on the mound.
Aich allowed just one run on six hits, and struck out five in a complete-game nine innings.
The Setters' attack featured seven different players recording RBIs and a total of 17 hits. Pace scored multiple runs in four different innings.
Freshman
Nicholas Montagna (Holmes, N.Y./Carmel) led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with four RBIs. He started the Setters' scoring with a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the third inning.
Graduate student
Luke Jacobi (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) followed with a 3-for-4, three-RBI effort while junior
Matthew Rinaldi (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Another graduate student,
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), put together a 3-for-5 game with two runs scored.
Game Two – Pace 4, Saint Rose 3 (Seven Innings)
The Setters battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the finale to win in walk-off fashion.
Down to their final five outs, and trailing by two runs, it was a solo home run from
Mitchell McCabe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford/ Bridgton Academy) and an RBI double by
Andrew Primm (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) that tied the game in the sixth.
The Setters then walked off in the seventh courtesy of an RBI single from Jacobi that scored Almonte from third.
Freshman
Grant Biederman (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) earned the win on the mound after getting a clutch final five outs. He entered the contest with Pace down 3-1 and the bases loaded with one out in the sixth.
