Pace Field Hockey Falls Just Shy Of NE10 Title At Adelphi

Setters lose in the championship game, 2-1, in Garden City. N.Y.

Garden City, N.Y. -- It was a cold and windy day at Motamed Feild at Adelphi University as the No. 7 seed Pace University field hockey team attempted to make history winning its first NE10 Championship title. The Blue and Gold fell just short, losing 2-1 to the host-school and No. 4 seed Adelphi.

Sophomore forward Krista Dietz (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and junior defender Kate Demars (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) were named to the NE10 All-Championship team. Adelphi grad student Kaylee Deleva was named MVP of the tournament after scoring both goals in the championship win.

Adelphi scored early, setting a tone within the first nine minutes of play. The remaining of the first period was an offensive struggle for both sides to score - while the second quarter wasn't any different. Neither team could find an opening to put a goal through into the back of the cage thanks to some remarkable saves from the Pace freshman goalie Alina Buerger (Königs Wusterhausen, Brandenburg, Germany/Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium) and the Adelphi freshman Mirthe Karstens.

Adelphi (13-8) went up 2-0 in the 36th minute.

Pace sophomore midfielder Noëlle Meij scored for the Setters in the 43rd minute with a goal from inside the half circle on a corner set up. The goal was the 10th this season for Meij.

Adelphi played eight minutes in the fourth down a player off a yellow card but the Blue and Gold could not get a shot off.

Pace had an impressive run in the championship, defeating No. 2 Assumption, ranked sixth nationally, 2-1, in the quarterfinals and No. 6 seed New Haven, 3-2 in double overtime.
