PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Playing in their regular-season home finale, the Pace University men's basketball team was edged by American International College on Saturday by a score of 69-65.
Fittingly on Senior Day, it was
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) and
Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, N.Y./Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) who led the charge for the Blue and Gold. Wejnert posted his 16
th 20-point effort of the season, finishing with 22, while Cohen Jr. registered a 15-point afternoon.
Wejnert also finished with a team-high nine boards, narrowly missing out on his 12th double-double of the season.
Another noteworthy performance was put together by junior point guard
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran). Already the holder of Pace's single-season and single-game assists records, he added one more mark to his resume on Saturday.
Jacobs' six helpers in the contest put him ahead of Pace Hall of Famer, Todd Ziogas ('99), as the Setters' all-time leader in assists. He has now dished out 476 in his career in just 85 games.
Freshmen
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) and
Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) supplemented the Pace scoring, combining for 13 points. Powell also chipped in eight boards and three blocks.
Pace's defense, which leads the NE10 in a plethora of categories, racked up another nine steals on Saturday. They also forced 16 AIC turnovers.
It was another dramatic finish for the Setters, who were coming off an overtime win at Adelphi earlier this week. Cohen Jr. drilled a game-tying three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining to tie the game at 65-65.
AIC would answer on the other side, however, as Xion Goulding knocked in what would be the game-winning jumper with about 23 ticks on the clock.
Up Next
Pace will play its final game of the regular season on Tuesday night, traveling to Le Moyne College for a 7:30 p.m. start.
