EASTON, Mass. – Highlighted by some last-minute heroics, the Pace University men's basketball team pulled out a 61-60 triumph at Stonehill College on Wednesday night. The win moves the Setters to 13-6 this season, including a 5-5 mark inside the NE10.
Facing a one-point deficit with less than a minute on the clock, the Setters made the final winning play on Wednesday night.
Junior point guard Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) found a wide-open Ray Montilus (Union, N.J./Pope John XXII) for a layup, providing Pace with a 61-60 edge with 22 seconds remaining.
The Setters were then able to make a game-ending defensive stop as a Brandon Twitty three-point attempt went off the mark with about two seconds left.
Senior Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) lifted the Setters offensively, finishing the night with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. The NE10's leading scorer has now tallied three consecutive double-doubles, eclipsing 20 points in each of them.
Wejnert did a large of portion of his damage at the free-throw line, knocking in 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. He also chipped in a pair of blocks defensively.
Speaking of foul shots, the Setters attempted a season-high 30 of them in the game (23-for-30).
Jacobs finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the line en route to 18 points. He also dished out a team-high four assists as he continues to lead the NE10 in helpers per game this season (7.7).
The Setters made just two three-pointers against the Skyhawks—both of which came off the hand of freshman Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall). Adams finished as Pace's third-leading scorer with eight points.
Pace's defense, which has been vital to its success this season, limited Stonehill to season-lows in both total points and field-goal percentage (34.0). Â
