PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In the first round of the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament, the Pace University baseball team was defeated by Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1. The loss puts the Setters' overall record this season at 31-15.
In a pitcher's duel between two of the top hurlers in the NE10, it was Le Moyne's Ryan Murphy who claimed victory. The sophomore allowed just the one unearned run on seven hits in a complete-game triumph.
Pace's starter
Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) also pitched well on Tuesday, yielding just two runs in eight innings of action. He finished with five strikeouts to raise his total to 102 this season, which is the most in school history.
The Dolphins' offense came from one tally in the fourth and another in the sixth. A run-scoring double play from Andrew Taft put Le Moyne on the board while Camillo Spinoso followed with an RBI single.
Following eight scoreless innings, Pace finally cut into the Dolphins' lead in the ninth following back-to-back singles from
Luke Jacobi (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) and
Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School).
With runners on first and third, Jacobi would then come home on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of
Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee).
The Setters will now wait and see if they are selected for the 2019 NCAA East Regional following the conclusion of all the league tournaments this weekend.
