PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In a thrilling contest that needed overtime to declare a winner, the No. 3 seed Pace University women's lacrosse team was defeated by sixth-seeded New Haven on Wednesday night, 13-12, in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament. The Setters' season comes to an end with an 11-7 overall record.
Juliana Marcolini (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) led the Pace offense with a four-point performance, scoring three goals and earning an assist.
Kayla Conway (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh),
Carlyn Mucci (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas), and
Emma Rafferty (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) each found the back of the net twice for the Setters.
Conway led the Setters with five draw controls, while
Alexandra Maitland-Ward (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) had a team-high four groundballs. Mucci,
Amanda Dickerson (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead), and
Allison Brady (Hopewell Junction, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) each caused two turnovers.
Sienna Masullo (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai School District) made nine saves in net for the Blue and Gold.
After trading goals back-and-forth to a 2-2 draw through the opening 13 minutes, the Setters went on a 3-0 run for the first sustained offense of the contest. Goals from Mucci, Marcolini, and
Johnna Leone (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) put Pace ahead 5-2. The Setters would extend the lead to as high as four on Conway's tally and Marcolini's second of the half. The Chargers strung together a pair of tallies, but
Aleya Corretjer (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) scored with 1:47 left in the half to reestablish Pace's three-goal advantage into the half, 8-5.
Defense led the way out of the locker room as just one goal—Marcolini's third of the contest—was the only tally on the scoreboard in the first 15 minutes. The attacks took over the remainder of regulation, as both teams combined for 10 goals. After Mucci scored at the 14:21 mark to make it three straight for Pace, the Chargers scored a pair to cut Pace's lead down to three. Right off the ensuing draw,
Emma Rafferty (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) scored eight seconds later to put Pace up 11-7.
The Chargers pulled to within two following back-to-back goals by Marina Skelly in a 32-second span. Kendra Nolan would make it a one-goal game with 7:22 remaining in regulation, but Conway netted a tally at the 3:27 mark to put the Blue and Gold ahead 12-10. Samantha Galler pulled the Chargers back within one with 2:54 in regulation, and sent the game to overtime off a Mackenzie Reh free possession shot with 19 seconds remaining.
New Haven would win the draw in overtime, and following a timeout, Reh would net the winner 34 seconds into the period.
