Brown's Walk-Off Home Run Sparks a Softball Sweep of NYIT

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Highlighted by a walk-off victory in the first game of the day, the Pace University softball team put together a doubleheader sweep of NYIT on Friday. The Setters earned identical winning scores of 4-3 over the Bears.

Game One Recap – Pace 4, NYIT 3 (Eight Innings)
Sophomore Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) served as the hero for the Blue and Gold in the opener. With Pace trailing 3-2 in the bottom of eighth, the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year launched a two-run walk-off home run over the left-field wall.

The Bears took the lead in the eighth courtesy of an RBI ground out off the bat of Kylie Lacerte. Sydney Kratzert scored on the play after being placed on second to begin the inning.

Junior Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) picked up the win for Pace in the circle. The right-hander tossed four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just the unearned run in the eighth.

After NYIT took a 2-0 lead in the third, Pace evened things with a two-run fifth. Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) tripled home Pace's first run of the game, while a Bears' error allowed the Setters to tie the score.

Senior Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) tallied a team-high two hits in the first game, and scored the Setters' first run.

Game Two Recap – Pace 4, NYIT 3
The Setters used Game One's momentum to jump out to the early 1-0 lead in the finale. Freshman Arielle Acosta (Union City, CA/Moreau Catholic High School) led off the game with a hit before stealing second, and coming home on an RBI single from junior Emma Carruth (Torrance, CA/Beverly Hills).

NYIT responded with a run in the third before plating two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Pace answered back immediately in the bottom half of the fourth. A double steal with runners on first and third yielded the Setters' second run. Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) raced home after Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) swiped second with two outs.

Carberry would go on to score the tying run—once again with two outs—on an RBI single from classmate Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park).

The Setters' final tally came in the following inning. An RBI ground out from Carruth put the home squad ahead, 4-3. Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) scored on the play after leading off the frame with a double to left.

Sophomore pitcher MacKenzie Garrick (South River, NJ/South River) went the distance for the Setters to pick up her third victory of the season. She scattered just six hits across seven innings.

The Setters will return home for another non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Pace welcomes Holy Family to campus for a noon start.
