Pace Baseball Wins Opener in Walk-Off Fashion Over LIU Post

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Seeing their first action of 2019, the Pace University baseball team earned a 2-1 walk-off win over LIU Post on Friday afternoon at Finnerty Field.

With one out, and runners on second and third, in the bottom of the 10th inning, sophomore Luke Jacobi (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) served as the hero for the Blue and Gold. The rookie roped a fastball over the right-fielder's head to bring home the game-winning run, Dean DePreta (Stamford, CT/Westhill High School), from third base.

DePreta led off the frame with a single before racing over to third on an infield single from Joseph Curcio (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills High School).

Sophomore Thomas Ippolito (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) earned the win on the mound after notching the final out of the top of the 10th inning. He finished the frame for junior Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack), who was masterful out of the pen. The right-hander tallied 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit in the process.

Senior ace Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) also pitched well for the Setters, yielding just one run on three hits across six innings of action. Wirchansky is coming off a season in which he led the entire nation in ERA with a mark of 0.71.

Pace's first run of the day—which provided a 1-0 lead in the third—came on a sacrifice fly from senior Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee). Classmate Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) scored on the play after notching a one-out infield single, and moving over to third on a base hit from Noah Clement (Voorhees, NJ/Roman Catholic High School).

The Pioneers' lone tally of the contest was posted in the fifth inning off a solo home run from Anthony Vaglica.
