Pace Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Adelphi

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In a matchup between two 11-win teams, the Pace University volleyball squad dropped a dramatic five-setter (25-14, 16-25, 23-25, 25-22, 13-15) to Adelphi University on Tuesday night. The loss snaps a six-match winning streak for the Setters, and moves their record to 11-3 on the season.

It was a back and forth affair from first serve as each team exchanged winning sets until the fifth and final set went the way of Adelphi. After Pace forced the decisive frame with a win the fourth, the Panthers squeaked out a final-set triumph.

Senior Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and freshman Sandra Yang (Bothell, WA/Edmonds-Woodway) piloted the Pace offense—each registering double-figure putaways.

Fontanet recorded her third double-double of the season (11 kills, 10 digs), while Yang's 12 kills and .258 hitting percentage were both team-highs. Samantha Nidini (Houston, TX/Clearlake) and Tatjana Calimpong-Burke (Waianae, HI/Iolani) were also key pieces to the offense. Nidini dished out a team-high 22 assists while Calimpong-Burke notched seven kills.

The Setters racked up nine total blocks in the match, led by 2.5 from sophomore Mackenzie Byrne (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). Also on the defensive side of the ball, libero Danielle Vaiano (Seaford, NY/St. Anthony's) picked up a team-high 18 digs. Freshman Katy Motz (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park) put together 13 assists, three aces and six digs in the contest.

In fitting fashion of such a close contest, Pace and Adelphi posted matching .145 hitting percentages.
