SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team had its 2018 season end on Tuesday afternoon courtesy of a 7-3 defeat to No. 15 Le Moyne in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament. The Setters wrap up their season with an overall record of 16-22-1.
The Dolphins, who entered the game as the top seed in the Southwest Division, used three early runs to seize momentum before solid outings from both Josiah Gray and Alex Kubera shut the door on the Setters.
Facing Le Moyne's ace Gray for the second time this season, the Setters mustered just five hits and a walk across seven innings. Gray entered the day with a perfect 9-0 record, while ranking third in the NE10 in ERA (1.05) this season.
Following a Gray exit after the seventh, Kubera tossed two scoreless inning to earn his fourth save of the season. Kubera was able to get the final six outs without allowing a hit, and striking out three.
After a slow start, which featured three runs for Le Moyne in the first two innings, the Setters seemed to settle down towards the middle innings. A solo home run from Paul Piccolino (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) sparked the Pace offense in the sixth, cutting the Dolphins' lead to 3-1.
After Le Moyne answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, the Setters enjoyed their most success in the seventh. Back-to-back two-out doubles from Ryan Crowley (Cornwall on Hudson, NY/Iona Prep/Monmouth) and Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) yielded Pace's second run of the day, while an RBI single from Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay/St. Bonaventure) cut the Dolphins' edge to just 5-3. Â
Holding a two-run lead through six and a half, Le Moyne tacked on one more in the seventh and another in the eighth. On the other side, Pace had no answer for Kubera over the final two innings. The Blue and Gold managed just two base runners in the eighth and ninth—one off a hit by pitch, and the other off a walk—but were unable to bring either home.
