Pace Softball Takes a Pair at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Highlighted by a pair of gems in the circle, the Pace University softball team took a pair of games at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday. The Setters snagged the opener by a 4-1 margin before earning a 3-1 triumph in Game Two. Pace's 2-0 afternoon shifts them to 10-4 against the Northeast-10 Southwest Division this season.

Inside the Numbers
*
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) continued her terrific sophomore campaign with another gem in Game One. The right-hander allowed just an unearned run over seven innings to improve to 9-5 this season. The complete-game, which featured six strikeouts, lowers Bernet's ERA to 1.34 on the year.

*Freshman MacKenzie Garrick (South River, NJ/South River) followed Bernet's lead with another complete-game effort in the day's finale. The rookie Setter scattered just four hits, while allowing one run, and striking out three.

*Senior Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) led the way in Game One, putting together a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored. Labs moves ever closer to the .400 mark, currently sitting with a team-best batting average of .396. She has 14 more hits than any other Setter this season, while also leading the squad in on-base percentage (.430).

*Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) and Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) also impressed in the opener, combining to go 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two walks.

*Pace needed just two hits in their Game Two win, capitalizing off a trio of SCSU errors. Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) and Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) were the lone Setters to tally knocks, while Brown and Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) posted RBIs.

Game One Recap – Pace 4, Southern Connecticut State 1
Fueled by Bernet's terrific performance in the circle, the Setters built up a 3-0 lead over the first two innings before adding another in the sixth. Pace put two cross in the first before adding a run in both the second and the sixth.

Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) and Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) each tallied RBI singles in the first inning, while a pair of Southern Connecticut errors led to Pace's other runs.

Bernet didn't allow a run until the sixth, which would go unearned after a Pace error.

Game Two Recap – Pace 3, Southern Connecticut State 1
The Blue and Gold used another stellar pitching performance in Game Two to build up an insurmountable lead. Garrick didn't allow her run-against until the seventh inning, leaving time for Pace to snag a 3-0 lead.

Two Owls' errors, along with Pace's only two hits of the game, yielded a pair of runs in the second inning. Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) recorded an RBI while Lew scored off a SCSU error.

Pace tacked on one more in the fourth off an RBI ground out from Carberry, while SCSU put their lone run across on a solo home run in the seventh.
