WATERBURY, Conn. – In their final game of 2018, the Pace University men's basketball team was defeated on the road to Post University, 88-80. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Setters, and moves their record to 9-4 this season.
Junior
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) led a Setter offense that put five players in double figures. Wejnert finished with a team-high 20—his fourth 20-point effort of the season—to go along with nine rebounds.
Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) and
Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, NY/Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) each finished with double-doubles for the Blue and Gold. Poleon put together a 14-point, 12-rebound line, while Cohen, Jr. notched 11 points and 11 rebounds of his own.
Sophomore guards
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) and
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) supplemented the Pace scoring, tallying 15 and 11 points, respectively. Jacobs led the Setters with five assists—his 10th game with at least five helpers.
Pace's first contest in 10 days featured one of the tightest first halves of the year thus far. The Setters and Eagles each held six leads, while the contest was tied on eight separate occasions. A three-pointer with less than a minute remaining from DJ Jarrett provided Post with a 34-33 at the break.
The Setters' best stretch of basketball took place in the beginning stages of the second half. Pace put together a 15-4 run to gain a 50-40 edge with 15:11 remaining. They would then gain their largest lead of the game at 57-43 following a Cohen, Jr three-pointer.
Down 14, the Eagles started to chip away. An 8-0 stretch from Post cut the Setters' lead to just 63-62 mid-way through the second half. Pace continued to keep the pressure on though as a Wejnert bucket extended the visitors edge back up to 69-62.
Post would once again cut the lead to just one at 73-72 before then outscoring the Setters 16-7 over the final 4:27 of regulation.
