Women's Basketball Erases Large Deficit, Falls Late to Bridgeport

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite erasing a 20-point first-half deficit, the Pace University women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday night, 51-48.

After Pace came all the way back to tie the game at 48-48 with just one minute remaining, a three-pointer from Bridgeport's Gianna Gotti with 32 seconds left proved to be the game-winner. Stefanie Svoboda's (Ossining, NY/Ossining) final half-court effort for Pace was on target, but rolled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

A slow start for the Setters proved to be the small difference in the game. A 14-3 Bridgeport run to begin the game turned into an 18-4 deficit after one quarter.  The Setters would go on to trail by as much as 20 points in the second quarter before facing a halftime deficit of 16.

Pace showed its grit after the break, shutting down the Bridgeport offense in the third quarter. The Setters allowed just six points in the frame en route to cutting the lead to just five points heading into the fourth.

An 11-2 stretch for the Blue and Gold in the final quarter knotted the game at 48 apiece.

Individually, Pace was led by a season-best performance from Brianna Wong (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley). The freshman guard tallied a team-high 16 points, making 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also recorded a team-best four steals.

Sophomore Lauren Schetter (Beacon, NY/Beacon High School) was Pace's leading rebounder with six boards, while also chipping in nine points. Senior Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) dished out three assists, to go along with five points and five rebounds.

The 51 points allowed in the game is the Setters' second-lowest mark of the season. Pace's defense also forced 18 turnovers.
