Pace Women's Basketball Begins New Year With 53-45 Defeat to LIU Post

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Pace University women's basketball team began their 2018-19 season on Saturday afternoon, falling to LIU Post 53-45 on the opening day of the ECC/NE10 Challenge.

Freshman Brianna Wong (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) led the Setters in the season opener, scoring 10 points and nabbing six rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. Lauren Schetter (Beacon, NY/Beacon High School) added seven points for the Blue and Gold, while the trio of Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining), Lauren Hackett (Commack, NY/St. Anthony's), and Jackie DelliSanti (Commack, NY/Commack) added six points each.

DelliSanti was Pace's leading rebounder on Saturday, pulling down nine boards. Schetter, Pace's leading rebounder a year ago, matched Wong's total with six boards of her own.

The Setters were all over the ball, recording 14 steals. Eight different members of the Blue and Gold had a takeaway in the contest, with Svoboda leading the effort with three.

Schetter and Lauren Hackett (Commack, NY/St. Anthony's) were able to provide the Setters with an early lead, but LIU Post ended the first quarter on a 12-9 run to secure the lead. The Pioneers extended their lead up to 12 in the second quarter, but Pace ended the half on a 7-0 run to pull to within five, heading into the half down 31-26.

The Setters hung close with the Pioneers throughout the second half, slicing LIU Post's edge to just two on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter. Despite Pace clawing back in the half, the Pioneers were able to pull away with a 9-0 run late in the fourth, securing the win with a 53-45 final.
