WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southwest Division No. 4 seed Pace University baseball team dropped a 14-1 decision to Northeast No. 2 Franklin Pierce University in the first game Northeast-10 Conference Championship Weekend at the University of New Haven on Thursday. Pace will now play in the first elimination game of the double-elimination tournament Friday morning against Southwest-Division rival New Haven.
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1st – Franklin Pierce
- With two down, third baseman John Friday drew a walk to keep the inning alive.
- Catcher Stephen Octave then short-hopped the fence in right field for an RBI double, plating Friday to put the Ravens ahead, 1-0.
Top 2nd – Pace
- Junior left fielder
Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) led off the second with a double to deep right.
- A ground out by senior first baseman
Garrett De Lotto (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) pushed Gulino to third.
- Senior right fielder
Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) then flied out to right, deep enough to score Gulino for a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
Bottom 7th – Franklin Pierce
- The Ravens strung together a 13-run inning in the seventh to take a 14-1 advantage.

Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts and just three hits allowed.
- Franklin Pierce starter John Amendola went seven frames, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts to get the win.
