PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A stellar day offensively, defensively and on the hill lifted the Pace University baseball team to a 15-3 victory over Concordia College in Thursday's non-conference matchup at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1st – Pace
- With two away, senior
Garrett De Lotto (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) dropped a double down the left-field line to keep the inning going.
- After junior left fielder
Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) walked, senior right fielder
Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) singled to left-center, bringing De Lotto home to put Pace up, 1-0.
- With runners on second and third, a balk brought in Gulino to make it 2-0.
- During the same at bat, Capaldi scored on a wild pitch to leave the Setters on top, 3-0.
Bottom 2nd – Pace
- Senior catcher
Frank Mayo (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) started the second with a ground-rule double to left, and then moved up to third on a ground out in the next at bat.
- Mayo then came in to score on a wild pitch, giving Pace a 4-0 advantage.
Bottom 3rd – Pace
- Junior designated hitter
Matthew Kurdewan (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) kept the inning going with a two-out single, followed by walk by sophomore second baseman
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick).
- Mayo then hit his second straight double, scoring Kurdewan for a five-run lead.
- Freshman third baseman
Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) then blasted his first-career home run, a three-run shot over the left-field fence, to make it an 8-0 Setter advantage.
- Senior center fielder
John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) then drew a walk, and junior shortstop
Paul Piccolino (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) blooped a single to center, setting up De Lotto for a two-RBI single up the middle, leaving the Setters with a 10-0 lead after three.
Top 7th – Concordia
- A bases-loaded walk for third baseman Tyler Epple brought in the Clippers' first run of the game.
- Denny DeLos Santos then drew another walk, scoring Concordia's second run to make it 10-2.
- Designated hitter German Dilone then brought in the third run of the inning on a fielder's choice to short, leaving the Setters up by seven.
Bottom 7th – Pace
- Kukura opened the seventh with a single up the middle, and the Piccolino put two runners in scoring position with a double down the left-field line.
- Gulino took advantage with a single into left field, bringing in both runs to make it a 12-3 game.
- Later in the inning, sophomore
Alex Pia (Guilford, CT/Xavier) came up to pinch hit and roped a triple down the line in left, scoring two runs to put Pace up by 11.
- Sophomore catcher
Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) pinch hit right after, and singled in Pia to make it a 15-3 ballgame.

James Wynne (North Salem, NY/North Salem) made a stellar first start of the year, going six frames with five strikeouts three hits and no runs allowed.
SETTER STATS
- Mayo batted 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.
- Bohlander finished 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.
- De Lotto hit 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a run and a double.
- Gulino scored twice and knocked in two more runs after going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- Kurdewan went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
- Capaldi scored twice and plated a run in his 1-for-5 effort.
- Piccolino hit 2-for-5 with two runs and a double.
