Pace Baseball Falls in Close Battle with No. 6 Grand Valley State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – On its fourth day down in Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday, the Pace University baseball team dropped a close 3-2 decision to No. 6 Grand Valley State University (GVSU) at Lake Myrtle Park Field 5.
 
SCORING PLAYS
Top 4th – Grand Valley State
- The Lakers brought in their first run of the game when first baseman Matt Williams hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring designated hitter Brody Andrews from third to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Bottom 4th – Pace
- The Setters quickly tied things up when junior left fielder Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) blasted his first home run of the game over the left-field fence, knotting it up at 1-1.
 
Top 6th – Grand Valley State
- Andrews hit an RBI double to put the Lakers back in the lead.
- Andrews later scored when Williams hit a triple to left-center, giving GVSU a 3-1 lead.
 
Bottom 7th – Pace
- Sophomore second baseman Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) reached on an error, and then freshman third baseman Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) roped a double down the left-field line, bringing Salmonese around to score and get Pace back within a run.

Loss: Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) (0-2)

Pitching Notes
- Sophomore starter Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) tossed six innings, striking out nine batters while allowing five hits and three runs.
- Junior reliever Anthony Criscione (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) took over for the final three frames, giving up just one hit while striking out six.
- GVSU starter Noah Lamboley gave up one run on four hits across six innings.
- Williams moved from first base to the mound in the eighth inning and struck out four of the five batters he faced to earn the save.
 
SETTER STATS
- Gulino went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a stolen base.
- Bohlander hit 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
 
LAKER LEADERS
- Andrew finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
- In addition to his save, Williams went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
