Pace Baseball Drops Contest to Ohio Dominican on Second Day of Florida Trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – In its second day at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, the Pace University baseball team dropped a 15-9 decision to Ohio Dominican University on Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park Field 2.
 
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1st – Ohio Dominican
- The Panthers got off to a fast start, scoring six runs on four hits in the bottom of the first for an early 6-0 advantage.
 
Bottom 4th – Ohio Dominican
- The Panthers put together another big inning, bringing eight runs across on six hits in the fourth to take a 14-0 lead.
 
Top 6th – Pace
- Showing no signs of giving up, Pace put its rally caps on to string together a big inning and get back in the game.
- The first two batters reached base, and then sophomore catcher Michael Barbato (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) singled in senior designated hitter Domenick Luongo (Darien, CT/Cardinal Spellman) to get Pace on the board.
- Sophomore second baseman Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) then doubled, plating freshman third baseman Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) and Barbato to make it 14-3 with an out yet to be recorded.
- With one down, junior left fielder Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then senior first baseman Garrett De Lotto (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) suffered the same fate to bring in another run.
- Senior center fielder John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Salmonese from third to make it 14-4.
- Senior right fielder Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) was then hit by a pitch as well, loading the bases once again.
- Luongo, batting for the second time in the inning, drew a walk to score another run.
- Bohlander then stroked a double, bringing De Lotto and Capaldi around to score and make it a 14-7 ballgame.
- Barbato then slapped a single to left, scoring Luongo for the second time in the inning to leave Pace down 14-8 after the top of the sixth.
 
Bottom 7th – Ohio Dominican
- Second baseman Tony Evans got the Panthers back on the board with a solo home run to lead off the seventh, making it a 15-8 game.
 
Top 9th – Pace
- With two on and two outs, freshman Andrew Fitzgerald (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand High School) got a chance to pinch hit, and came through with an RBI double to left-center to make it 15-9.

Pitching Notes
- Senior James Wynne (North Salem, NY/North Salem) came on in relief in the fourth and finished out the game, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing just one run.
- Ohio Dominican starter Joe Filosa allowed eight runs in 5.2 innings, but left with the lead to pick up the win.
- Mitchell Bault got the save for the Panthers after throwing the final 3.1 innings and allowing one run on seven hits.
 
SETTER STATS
- Salmonese hit 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot, scoring two runs, knocking in two more, hitting a double and stealing a base.
- Bohlander and Barbato both took advantage of the opportunity to sub in midway through the game with matching 2-for-3, two-RBI, one-run stat lines. Bohlander also hit a double.
- Gulino went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
PANTHER LEADERS
- Right fielder Colin Kaucher hit 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, two runs and two doubles.
- Evans batted 2-for-4 with four runs, two RBIs and a home run.
- Left fielder Genesis Hillard finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a triple.
