Pace Men’s Basketball Drops Road Tilt at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Pace University men's basketball shouldered a 70-49 setback at the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium Wednesday evening. Saint Rose entered the game ranked No. 2 in the NCAA East Region Rankings, which were released for the first time this season on Wednesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- The Setters took the lead midway through the opening half after sophomore Ryan Peterson (Wethersfield, CT/St. Thomas More) broke an 8-8 tie with a three.
- Jack Jones then matched Peterson to tie the game for Saint Rose, but freshman Ray Montilus (Union, NJ/Pope John XXII) followed with a triple of his own to put the Setters back on top.
- Saint Rose chipped away when Julian Lipinski hit a pair of free throws, but sophomore Paton Gibbs (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) then drained a long ball from the top of the arc to make it a four-point game.
- The Golden Knights then went on a 10-0 run to take a 23-17 edge with 5:35 left in the half.
- Peterson sank one from behind the arc to cut the deficit in half, but the Golden Knights kept the heat on and scored another four points.
- The Setters got within three when freshman Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) made a layup, but the Golden Knights tallied the last five points of the half to take a 34-26 advantage into the locker room.
 
HALFTIME LEADERS
- Peterson led the Setters with eight points after hitting a pair of threes in the first half.
- Tyler Sayre had 13 points for the Golden Knights to lead all scorers at the break.
 
SECOND HALF
- Saint Rose kept the momentum as the second half began, scoring the first 11 points, including three triples by Mical Ryan-Boyd, to take a 45-26 lead with 17:30 still left to play.
- Pace then slowly chipped away at the deficit, scoring 17 of the next 23 points in the game to draw within eight at 51-43.
- The Golden Knights then turned the tables, going on an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 16, which helped the home team secure the win.
 
SETTER STATS
- Peterson finished up with a team-high 16 points.
- Wejnert scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards. He also blocked three shots.
 
GOLDEN KNIGHT LEADERS
- Sayre ended up with 18 points to lead the Golden Knights.
- Chris Dorgler grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and added 11 points.

- Saint Rose: 22-6 (14-5 NE10)
 
UP NEXT
- - The Setters return home for Play4Kay Day and Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 18, as they host the University of New Haven in another NE10 matchup. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m., with Senior Day being celebrated prior to tip-off.
