Women's Basketball Defeats New Haven for Fifth Straight Win

PLEASNTVILLE, N.Y. – A strong push in the final quarter propelled the Pace University women's basketball team to a historic win on Tuesday night, defeating Northeast-10 Conference foe New Haven University, 55-48. The victory, which improves the Setters' record on the year to 8-1 (5-0 NE10), was the 450th career win for head coach Carrie Seymour, who ranks 15th among active DII coaches in all-time wins.

Inside the Numbers
*Senior co-captain Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) led the attack with 16 points, the second time in the past three games she has reached that mark. Rosalbo shot 6-of-12 from the field, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

*Junior Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining) reached double digits for the fourth time in Pace's last five contests. She scored 11 for the Blue and Gold, and led the Setters from beyond the arc with three long balls.

*As a team, the Setters recovered 12 offensive rebounds. Junior Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) led Pace with three offensive boards, tying her season-high. Freshmen Naya Rivera (Pomona, NY/North Rockland) and Lauren Schetter (Beacon, NY/Beacon High School) each added two rebounds on the offensive side. Schetter leads the team in total rebounds for the season with 52.

*The Setters defense forced 29 turnovers, matching their season high set on Nov. 27 against Nyack College. The team posted another double-digit steal effort, their fifth of the season and fourth in their last five games. The Blue and Gold registered 14 steals, led by junior Kristina Olikhver (Moscow, Russia/Saint Andrew's) with three. Five other Setters added two takeaways each.

How it Happened
The first half was a back-and-forth effort by both sides, with eight ties and five lead changes occurring in the first 20 minutes. Neither team was able to find separation in the first quarter, with the largest lead being established at just three points by Pace. The Setters took a 10-7 advantage with two and a half minutes remaining in the opener, but the Chargers answered with a bucket seconds later and held the Setters to a single point over the final two minutes to cut the Pace lead down to 11-9 at the end of the first.

New Haven opened the second by tying the game up at 11-11 in the first minute. Both squads would take two-point advantages that they were unable to develop in the following minutes, leading to a 17-17 tie with three and a half left in the half. A pair of layups by Svoboda and Jackie DelliSanti (Commack, NY/Commack) gave the home squad a four point advantage in the closing minutes, but a 7-3 run by New Haven to close out the half sent the teams to halftime knotted up at 24-24.

The second half got off to a sluggish start with neither offense being able to click in the third. After a three-pointer by Monteleone in the opening minute, neither team would score a basket until almost three minutes later when New Haven cut the Pace lead back to one. The Setters managed just seven points for the remainder of the quarter, but were able to limit New Haven to six points over the final five minutes to take a narrow 34-32 lead into the fourth.

After the Chargers cut the Setter lead down to two twice to open up the quarter, the Blue and Gold responded with a 12-4 run over four minutes to take a 50-38 lead, their largest cushion of the night. New Haven was unable to provide an answer to the offensive rush, and while they outscored Pace 10-5 for the remainder of regulation, the Setters were able to hold off the comeback attempt and earn a 55-48 victory in front of the home crowd.

Up Next
The Setters look to make it six wins in a row when they return to action on Saturday. Pace travels to Southern Connecticut State University to take on the Owls at 1:30 p.m.
