Balanced Attack Leads Pace Men's Basketball Past Post, 87-74

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University men's basketball team improved their home record to 2-0 on the season, defeating Post University by a final score of 87-74 at the Goldstein Fitness Center on Sunday afternoon.

Inside the Numbers
*For a third straight game, Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) was the leading scorer for the Blue and Gold. The sophomore forward, who leads all Setters scorers with 17.8 points per game this year, scored 16 in his 22 minutes of action. Wejnert has now reached double figures in each of Pace's six contests this season.

*Leading the Setters along with Wejnert was Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran), who also scored 16 points. Like Wejnert, the freshman Jacobs has scored double-digit points in each game of the season thus far. He was a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc, leading the Setters in three pointers for the day. Jacobs was also 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

*Three other members of the Blue and Gold eclipsed 10 points offensively. Junior Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) scored 15 point off the bench, his best scoring performance in his past three games. In his first start of the season, Vinny Dalessandro (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) scored 12, while freshman Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) rounded out the top offensive performers with a season-high 11 points.

*In addition to a strong offensive performance, Dalessandro led the Blue and Gold with seven defensive rebounds. Poleon added six boards on the day, five on the defensive end. He is now tied with Luke McLaughlin (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) for the team lead in rebounds this season with 37. McLaughlin led Pace with three offensive boards.

*Ray Montilus (Union, NJ/Pope John XXII) caused chaos for Post ball handlers, recording a season-high four steals. The sophomore is now third on the team with seven steals on the year. Pace as a team recorded seven steals on the day.

*The Setters had their best game shooting beyond the arc this season, going 10-for-21 on three-pointers in the contest for a .476 shooting percentage. In addition to Jacobs' team-leading three, Dalessando, Wejnert, and Dana Raysor (Willingboro, NJ/St. Patrick / Delaware State University) each knocked down two long balls.

*The Blue and Gold were able to execute from the free-throw line, shooting 68.8 percent from the charity stripe compared to Post's 53.8 percent. The Setters went 4-of-5 from the line in the second half.

How it Happened
Looking to avenge their overtime loss against Post earlier this season, the Setters came out strong to open up the contest. Post secured an early 4-2 lead, but the two-point deficit would be the largest the Blue and Gold faced all day, as the offense quickly found a rhythm that the Eagles were unable to respond to.

Leading 14-13 seven and a half minutes in to the half, the Setters went on a 10-0 run over a two-minute span that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. A pair of three-pointers from Raysor and Wejnert capped off the run to put the Blue and Gold ahead 24-13 with 10 minutes left in the half. The Setters would expand their lead to as much as 18, but a 10-0 run on the other end of the court brought Post back to within single digits. Pace was able to stop the Eagles' momentum, and took a 44-35 lead into halftime.

Post outscored the Setters 10-7 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Setters responded with an 11-3 run to put the Blue and Gold up 62-48 with just under 13 minutes left to play. The Pace lead never fell back below double digits, as the Setters led by as much as 19 in the half. Shooting 17-for-29 over the final 20 minutes, the Setters were able to effectively hold off the Post offense and earn the 13-point victory, snapping a two-game skid.

Up Next
The Setters look for their first road win of the season when they travel to Northeast-10 foe American International College on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
